Ashley Black Nicole White 2013 Scholarship Recipient

Currently a Full member of the Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department for 2 years. Prior to becoming a full member her volunteer experience included:

  1. Contributed her time and effort to at least six semi annual fundraising BBQ banquets
  2. Assisted with over thirty five monthly “Firehouse Bluegrass” music concerts – These events enabled the Carrollton Volunteer Fire department to a achieve a level of community First Response capability.

On her own accord she became:

  1. American Red Cross first aide and CPR qualified.
  2. Passed in the 95 percentile the requirements for the Commonwealth of Virginia Basic Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification. Upon graduating of the course she practiced as an EMT on the transport ambulances of the CVFD.
  3. She then continued on to volunteer in extensive training in firefighting. She was awarded the first level (FFI) Commonwealth certificate in Firefighting which included becoming proficient in HAZMAT awareness and operations.

Ashley’s SHS Activities included Beta Club, Key Club, Math Honor Society, Mentor for the Ignition program & member of the Sailing Team.

She has been employed with Bennett’s Creek Nursery and True Value Hardware through her high school years.

Ashley has shown a tremendous level of endurance and commitment to her community and school as shown through her volunteer accomplishments as well as becoming a young female volunteer firefighter all while being an exceptional SHS student.

The Nicole R. White Memorial Scholarship Fund is pleased to announce its 2012 scholarship winner. She is Caitlin Grumbling, a senior from Smithfield High School. Caitlin received $5,000 to be used toward her higher education goals. She will be attending UVA in the Fall of 2012 as an Engineering Student. She plans to Major in Aerospace/Mechanical Engineering with a Minor in Business and/or Masters in Public Policy.

In Smithfield High School she showed leadership and community service by actively participating in the following:

  • Founder and President – Operation Smile Club in which she started and organized donations from the community and planned fundraising events to send surgical packets for a mission in Guatemala. “The Operation Smile Club builds awareness, raises funds and educates students about core values of commitment, leadership and volunteerism.”
  • Elected Mayor – American Legion Auxiliary Virginia Girls State Delegate
  • Captain – Varsity and JV Sailing
  • President – National Honor Society
  • Mentor – Ignition Mentorship Program

2008 Nicole Regina White Memorial Scholarship

The Nicole R. White Memorial Scholarship Fund selected its first recipient in 2008. She is Amber Nicole Walters, a senior from Smithfield High School. Amber received $5,000 to be used toward her higher education goals. The scholarship is the highest ever awarded to a Smithfield High student. While good academics is an important ingredient, the selection committee chose Miss Walters for her outstanding support for the community and staunch record of volunteerism.
